Not everyone plans to build a career in the rental housing industry. For Derek DeVries, the journey started in a classroom.
After graduating from Northern Illinois University, Derek moved to Texas and spent 15 years as an educator and coach, teaching world history and leading athletic programs. He loved mentoring students and building teams, but eventually reached a point where he felt he had accomplished what he set out to do in education. When a former colleague encouraged him to explore a sales role in the multifamily construction industry, it wasn’t an obvious next step—but it turned out to be the right one.
In this episode of Unlocking Doors, Derek shares what it was like to leave a stable career and step into something completely new. His first year felt intimidating. The apartment industry was far bigger and more complex than he had imagined. But through mentorship, persistence, and a willingness to learn, he found his footing.
Today, Derek serves as Director of Local Sales at Redux Construction, with more than 15 years in the industry. He credits much of his success to transferable skills from education—communication, organization, leadership, and relationship-building. Those skills translated directly into sales and leadership within multifamily.
His advice to job seekers considering a career pivot?
Go for it—but be ready to take initiative. This industry rewards those who are willing to build relationships, stay consistent, and give their best effort every day.
Derek also emphasizes the financial opportunity available in multifamily, particularly for those coming from professions like education or public service. For many, it can mean not only a career shift, but a meaningful increase in earning potential and professional growth.
Most importantly, he describes the rental housing industry as a place where relationships matter. It’s not just a job—it’s a community. The friendships and professional connections built here often last a lifetime.
If you’re exploring your next step and wondering where your skills might fit, Derek’s story is a powerful reminder that your experience—no matter the industry—can open doors in multifamily. Learn more about careers in the Texas apartment industry: roomtogrowtx.org
